CO-EXISTENCE
– RED EARTH SERIES 2018
RED SANDSTONE
55 X 26 X 44CM H
Co-Existence was inspired during the wave of Syrian immigrants to Europe in 2017 and a boy was washed up on the shore. At that time, I had just moved to a new home with beautiful views and comfortable living space. It was in this contrast, emotions were intensified and I was deeply moved by this child’s story, by the plight of the asylum seekers and economic refugees.
Like the twins’ relationship of sharing the same placenta, we human beings are bound together through the environment we live in, which is humanity ultimately. In humanity, we can experience and share the joy of birth, pain during sickness, and suffering in calamities together. At the same time, each one of us has to go through the cycle of life independently: birth, ageing, sickness, and death. From dust we came, and to dust we return. The physical journey of life can be viewed through the transverse plane of the sculpture.
I hope this piece will speak to you in a way I cannot myself.
