Robinson Crusoe 2021

english Oak

33 x 28 x 30cm

“Robinson Crusoe” is about spiritual break-through, via physical hardship and mental agility.

The original log of this piece was rescued from its fate of fueling a fire. I was intrigued by its shape and form that were left from its felling, and by the grain of the wood itself. As I started cleaning and carving the wood, its fragrance was more than lovely. I would probably describe it now as a chutney smell. Yes, an endearing experience I had with it at the start.

As I observed and explored further, images of a bird emerged, a wing, flying, free…

And the grain and the colour of the wood gave away its hidden secret, images that I am always privileged to be able to bring out and set free, to share.

Nevertheless, it was only when I discerned hints of a face profile, I knew the story was complete; a crucial point of how and where to tidy up, to emphasise or reduce certain details so as all the elements, or features of the piece would be speaking the same language – portraying the physical and spiritual adventure of a Robinson Crusoe.

Seashells, seagulls, heavy waves, driftwood, caves, dark nights… there is also that subtle tension of the tug of war as he fights his spiritual battle. With his life tossing back and forth literally on the sea, it is only fitting, and richly rewarding in the strong connection that developed; that this piece is able to and ought to be viewed from multiple perspectives physically. Just like Robinson’s journey, this sculpture also offers unpredictability and surprises for you to discover.
